Live edge tables, built to last for generations.

Custom Wood Creations is a family shop tucked into an Amish community in the mountains of Southwest Virginia. Every slab is milled, dried, and finished by hand. No two are alike.

Our story

It started with rejected logs and a chainsaw mill.

In 2011, Sam Chupp bought a simple Alaskan chainsaw mill and started slabbing the oversized, rejected logs local sawmills didn't want. Beautiful hardwood slabs piled up with no plan for them. His son David, working in a cabinet shop at the time, let his woodworker's instincts take over.

Friends and family got the first pieces. Then came the first order, then a second, then a third. By 2016 the work had David busy full time. Today our showroom, mill, and wood shop sit a short walk from each other, and our tables live in homes across America.

How we build

Slow wood, patient work.

Ring 01

Live edge and epoxy

Many pieces that leave the shop are river tables: two slabs joined by a band of hardened epoxy. Many others are a single live edge slab where the epoxy fills the knots, cracks, and hollows instead, and locks the wild edge in glass. A big table can take as much as thirty gallons.

Ring 02

Aged, air-dried, kiln-dried

Some logs age up to a year before slabbing so the figure develops. Slabs then air-dry for another year before the kiln, and wait in a climate-controlled warehouse until the right project comes.

Ring 03

Slabs, planing, and more

We sell unfinished live edge slabs and plane slabs for your own projects. We also build rustic chairs, lamps, chandeliers, and taxidermy mounting bases.
